Q: 1. What can I expect in a theoretical driving course?

A Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) is a mandatory 15-hour training program that introduces applicants to essential driving knowledge before they proceed with the Student-Driver's Permit process. The course may be completed through an approved classroom-based or online format, depending on the available provider and applicant's circumstances. Lessons generally cover traffic rules, road signs, right-of-way, defensive driving, road safety, driver responsibilities, vehicle safety, emergencies, and relevant transportation laws. Online options such as the Online Theoretical Driving Course (OTDC) allow students to study through an internet-based platform, while face-to-face programs are normally conducted over scheduled classroom sessions. The exact schedule and completion process can vary by accredited provider.

Q: 3. How many questions are in the theoretical driving exam?

The number of questions depends on which LTO theoretical examination you are referring to because the theoretical course assessment and the LTO licensing examination are not necessarily the same test. Current commonly cited LTO examination formats include 40 multiple-choice questions for non-professional license applicants and 60 questions for professional license applicants , with a generally cited passing requirement of 75%. A separate examination associated with Student Permit or CDE-related transactions may have a different number of questions and passing requirement. Applicants should therefore check the latest LTO instructions for the specific examination they are taking rather than assuming that every theoretical test has the same number of items.

Q: 4. How many days does the theoretical driving course take?

The required Theoretical Driving Course is 15 hours , but the number of days needed to complete it depends on the format and schedule of the provider. A face-to-face classroom course may be arranged over approximately two days, with several hours of instruction each day, while an online OTDC may allow students to complete lessons according to the platform's permitted schedule or validity period. The important requirement is that the applicant completes the required training and applicable assessments rather than simply counting the number of calendar days. Before enrolling, ask your selected driving-school partner about its current timetable, online completion rules, and deadline for finishing the course.

Q: 5. What is the purpose of the Theoretical Driving Course?

The main purpose of the Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) is to give aspiring drivers the knowledge they need to understand traffic regulations, road safety, driver responsibilities, and proper behaviour before they begin practical driving and continue with the licensing process. The course introduces subjects such as road signs, traffic signals, right-of-way, defensive driving, vehicle safety, emergencies, and applicable land-transportation laws. It is not intended to replace practical driving instruction because theoretical training focuses on knowledge rather than hands-on vehicle control. Completing the TDC helps establish the basic understanding that a new driver can later apply during practical driving lessons and actual road use.

Q: 6. What should I do after completing the Theoretical Driving Course?

After completing the required TDC or OTDC training , you should follow your accredited driving school's instructions for completing the applicable assessment and obtaining your TDC Certificate of Completion . Once your theoretical training has been properly recorded, prepare the remaining documents and information required for the LTO Student-Driver's Permit application. This may involve checking your LTMS information, preparing proof of identity and age, completing required medical documentation, and meeting other applicable LTO requirements. Completing the theoretical course does not automatically issue a Student-Driver's Permit, so applicants should treat the certificate and the LTO permit application as separate steps in the overall process.

Question 1

1. What can I expect in a theoretical driving course?

Accepted Answer

A Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) is a mandatory 15-hour training program that introduces applicants to essential driving knowledge before they proceed with the Student-Driver's Permit process. The course may be completed through an approved classroom-based or online format, depending on the available provider and applicant's circumstances. The exact schedule and completion process can vary by accredited provider.

Question 2

2. Is the theoretical driving exam difficult?

Accepted Answer

The theoretical driving assessment is generally manageable for applicants who properly study the course material, particularly the sections covering road signs, traffic rules, right-of-way, defensive driving, and safe driving practices. The questions are intended to test your understanding of driving knowledge and appropriate road behaviour, so simply guessing answers can make the assessment more difficult. Applicants should review the lessons carefully and pay attention to situations involving traffic signals, road signs, road-sharing responsibilities, and defensive driving. The difficulty can vary depending on the particular assessment, but preparing before the exam is the best way to improve your chances of passing.

Question 3

3. How many questions are in the theoretical driving exam?

Accepted Answer

The number of questions depends on which LTO theoretical examination you are referring to because the theoretical course assessment and the LTO licensing examination are not necessarily the same test. Current commonly cited LTO examination formats include 40 multiple-choice questions for non-professional license applicants and 60 questions for professional license applicants, with a generally cited passing requirement of 75%. Question 4

4. How many days does the theoretical driving course take?

Accepted Answer

A face-to-face classroom course may be arranged over approximately two days, with several hours of instruction each day, while an online OTDC may allow students to complete lessons according to the platform's permitted schedule or validity period. Question 5

5. What is the purpose of the Theoretical Driving Course?

Accepted Answer

The main purpose of the Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) is to give aspiring drivers the knowledge they need to understand traffic regulations, road safety, driver responsibilities, and proper behaviour before they begin practical driving and continue with the licensing process. Once your theoretical training has been properly recorded, prepare the remaining documents and information required for the LTO Student-Driver's Permit application. Completing the theoretical course does not automatically issue a Student-Driver's Permit, so applicants should treat the certificate and the LTO permit application as separate steps in the overall process.

Question 7

7. What is the passing score for the theoretical driving exam?

Accepted Answer

The passing score depends on the particular examination being taken. A commonly cited LTO theoretical examination standard is 75%, which corresponds to at least 30 correct answers out of 40 questions for a non-professional license examination and 45 correct answers out of 60 questions for a professional license examination. Other assessments, including examinations associated with Student Permit or CDE-related transactions, may use different question counts and passing percentages, so applicants should not automatically apply the 75% figure to every test connected with driving education. For an OTDC or driving-school assessment, follow the current instructions and passing standard provided by your accredited provider.
